NOTES FROM THE STUDIO

June 2, 2006

Dear Collector:

It has been more than six years since I was painting on a full-time basis and I miss it more than anything in the world.

I haven’t been able to return to the studio at nearly the level that I once enjoyed and my doctors tell me that I probably will never reach those levels of painting productivity again. In 1999, I became very ill from the cumulative effects of paint and related toxins and developed “sick building syndrome” which has precipitated severe allergies, numerous surgeries and a regimen that requires I take injections of the drug Xolair® - a drug therapy that has stabilized my condition. For these

life- saving measures, I am truly grateful.

Today, when I do go to the studio to paint it is a rather laborious process because I must wear protective clothing and use a special breathing apparatus. Recently, in fact, the Intel Corporation was kind enough to provide me with “clean room” gear known as “bunny suits” that enable me to paint without further compromising my health.

In spite of having to stay away from the studio, something almost magical has occurred that has opened incredible new avenues for me in creating art again. I have rigorously honed my drawing skills (drawing was actually my first love when I began making art so many years ago) and I am reaching new levels of competency and output that has catapulted me back into the fine art scene with a vengeance.

I recently broke a contract with one of the top art agencies in the world. This agency represents only A-list artists including the number one selling artist in the world. We were initially very excited to work with this agency because of comprehensive plans to re-launch my career on a global scale. The plans included strategic components such as the opening of an exclusive Andrew Lakey gallery in Hawaii, an ambitious international tour and an aggressive worldwide gallery program.

Unfortunately, due to my tenuous health, I had to unwind my professional relationship with this agency group because of my inability to keep up with the heavy travel and appearance schedules for the many gallery shows like the 90’s. The final straw was my inability to attend Art Expo in New York last February. This was a major show that my art agency wanted me to actively participate in and my doctors told me flat out, I could not attend.

Being a fighter and a survivor, I never got down on myself. My business partner and agent Doug Brown, who understands the seriousness of my condition, my drive to create and my prolific bent for creating art, has developed a business model that is about to turn the fine art world upside down and the traditional gallery model inside out. Some may think that ebay™ seems like a strange place to buy and sell fine art, but it is fast becoming a business center for the art world. Nearly every famous fine artist is found there.

One of my potential dealers back East argued that this new business model would not work – that galleries should remain the repository and controlling outlet for the stewardship of the artist and his or her portfolio. Buyers and collectors of fine art would be resistant to an Internet-based, market-driven system. After all, many collectors and auction houses prefer “dead artists” and scarcity of “product”. The idea that fine art could be available to everyone and at a price set by the public market is the same general concept that Google™ employed when it floated the idea to Wall Street bankers of letting “Main Street” bid for IPO shares to determine its launch valuation. Though Google™ was initially punished by the banking powers, the five-year old Internet-based company rebounded with spectacular success shortly thereafter.

The gallery model is not preferable to me for two fundamental reasons: 1) I am not able to travel at nearly the level I used to for health reasons and 2) Travel also interrupts my daily regimen of creating art. Surprisingly enough, the new art business model is working beautifully and the East coast dealer is now competing online with everyone else – and even purchased nine pieces in the past two weeks.

On ebay™, you can buy a multi-million dollar mansion and you can buy a yacht – you can even buy an original Picasso. In fact, I invite you to enter Picasso’s name in the search field on the ebay™ home page and see for yourself. You will find a range of items – from original art to show posters. Make sure that whenever you are in the market to buy art from any artist or his or her representative that you are doing business with a reputable seller and that they can authenticate the work.

I have decided to reenter the art world on my own terms and I am letting the world and everyone who is interested in my art to determine the value of it – to set my price on a piece-by-piece basis. I don’t care if you are an art dealer, a high-end collector or a novice art aficionado, at Lakey Studios no one can acquire art directly from the studio – the world market will set the price for my art, every day, on a level playing field.

If you would like to see my current works, please go to my web portal at AndrewLakey.com or go to ebay™ and enter Andrew Lakey into the search field. Though I do not paint as much as I used to, I still paint every day. I have returned to drawing with a newfound passion and I believe my new work is the finest I’ve ever done. Even if you are not interested in collecting or not currently in the market for art, I believe you will enjoy seeing the latest work. Of particular interest are The Genesis Project, Silhouettes & Shadows and my new angel drawings. You can see these projects in greater detail by going to the micro-sites on the Andrewlakey.com home page.

You can also download and watch my first independent film, Silhouettes & Shadows that will be playing in film festivals around the world over the next two years.

I remain faithful and true to my art. I remain committed to creating original art and most of the artwork you will find on ebay™, or anywhere else where I am represented by one of my authorized dealers, will be original works of art. Currently at Lakey Studios, we are only releasing original works of art – no print programs are in production and none are currently planned.

The latest Angel drawings and Genesis Project drawings are one-of-a-kind, unique pieces – they are all hand-signed and dated by me. Additionally, I am providing hand written information on the “Provenance” that you will find with every original work that I release. Please note that an Andrew Lakey Provenance with my handwriting (and secretly inscribed notations) is key to establishing the authenticity of that work of art. Make sure that if you are considering the purchase of an Andrew Lakey work of art, it has a personally handwritten Provenance that corresponds to it.

We will let the majority of the art world sell prints. Lakey Studios is in the business of making original art available. I want people everywhere to own my original art.

Taking some time off has given me the opportunity to reflect on the angel icon I created more than a decade ago and the impact it has had on my artwork and my journey as an artist. Collectors have recounted wonderful stories about the effects that my angel artwork has had on loved ones – feelings of peace and serenity, reports of healings, even experiences that have bordered on miraculous.

While I am inspired by these events, I am quite secure in knowing that my real strengths reside in the realm of creating art. The enjoyment for me is seeing how people add emotional and spiritual value to the artwork they own. If I am the agent that brings these creative works into existence, my collectors sustain them and empower them with their love and imagination. It is like being a part of a life cycle that I am sharing with others around the world.

After all, I am just an artist – nothing more. And while I am truly thankful for the many gifts that God has given me, I honestly don’t believe that I possess any extrasensory or paranormal talents.  I see things intensely. About this, there is no doubt.  I loved painting the angel icon because it is accessible to people from so many different walks of life and spiritual orientations. Now I am drawing them with the same enthusiasm. I am so grateful that many have embraced my little angel icon – it has been an inspiration to me. For those of you who have stayed in touch I am invigorated from your prayers and kind words.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and find out what is happening at Lakey Studios. Beginning in June of this year, the Studio will be publishing a monthly, online newsletter which you can download at our website. I look forward to creating art for as many people as I am able. If you have any questions at all, please contact the studio executive secretary, Monika Anderson.

Please email us if you would like to remain on our personalized collector’s list.

Sincerely,

Andrew Lakey
