Andrew Lakey

Silhouettes & Shadows
Lakey’s portraiture, as seen in his new Silhouettes & Shadows are, despite their literal description, not images of contingent beings but rather the painterly, luminal metadata that say that these paintings are more than portraits - these are bio-feedback loops of representation.

What elevates Lakey’s work is methodology meticulously matched to

material – a pursuit of attitude, process and procedure that yields the residue of unforeseen and indestructible experiences that remain long after the artist’s process of painting is complete.

The Process
Lakey’s works exude a generosity of graphical intelligence. Perfectly-balanced design is at the heart of his work – and design is the motor that animates the paintings when finished. Thus, it is this graphical engine that generates the energy emitted from his paintings. While Lakey uses such hieroglyphics – the “angel” and the “heart” as his leitmotifs, the real power of his angel and heart paintings is not so much the spiritual subject matter but the spirited energy that is derived from the intricate dance and the balancing act of lines, shapes and rune-like designs that define his work.

It is as if the iconic angel and heart - the quintessential emblems – are leading us to deeper, more sensate truths of harmony, balance and positive outcome. Lakey dispels his struggles - not with angels, or even, the hearts that dominate his work currently - but with his art. Lakey’s icons provide an inviting entrance and a quickly identifiable starting point that lead to the real subtext of his work – design and color.
