Beginning With Angels

When he suddenly began painting in 1990 after a traumatic personal experience Lakey, who loosely fits in the “outsider” genre, began with no formal art training. Leveraging a compulsive/obsessive personality, he quickly honed his painting techniques, design processes and subject matter, focusing primarily on an angel

icon [of his design] which would make repeated appearances in thousands of paintings over the next 10 years.

5 Year Hiatus
With his rise to notoriety checked by a 5 year health-related hiatus, Lakey has returned to the studio creating new and prodigious works that cover a multitude of projects and portfolios.

While his passion for painting nearly killed him, he has recovered in great part, thanks to the guidance of his doctors and injections of experimental drugs like Xolair® and numerous (and ongoing) surgeries. Lakey has had to follow a new regimen which restricts the amount of time he can spend in the studio – a process that also requires his wearing protective gear and a special breathing apparatus while painting.

Coming back “whole” in any career is exceptionally difficult, but for Lakey, the works he is now painting provide compelling proof of his authenticity as one of the working artists on the American fine art landscape - a presence which is provoking interest and generating presence in art markets.
